Novel Research

The key part of any novel is the research. While the content is the heart of the story, research fills out the details. Research can add detail and authenticity to the story; inspire plot points; and help build characterization of the hero/heroine.

My research style includes using both primary and secondary sources. A primary source could be:

  • A lifestyle blog
  • An autobiography
  • Letters or dairies
  • Research data
  • Interviews with a person directly involved in the subject

Secondary sources could include:

  • Nonfiction books written by someone not directly involved in the subject
  • Websites
  • Essays
  • Commentary or reviews on the subject

Please note a live interview as a primary source is charged as one hour because of the time it takes to set up and conduct the interview.
